GEO Statistics: 60+ Latest Data Points for 2025–2026
Updated 4 November 2026 with the first direct query-volume comparison between a chat surface and a search engine: on 2 November 2026 OpenAI consumer product lead Adam Fry said ChatGPT search-type queries are running at roughly one fifth of Google’s (about 20%), on ~1.2 billion weekly active users, up about 200 million in sixty days after crossing 1 billion on 31 August 2026. The operational read is that reach and retrieval are drifting apart — ChatGPT carries 74.78% of AI referral traffic and attaches sources to 93.9% of answers but averages 3.29 citations per answer, against Perplexity’s 9.20–9.68 — so citation share and audience share need separate budgets. Carries the SE Ranking 74.78% / Gemini 11.56% / Perplexity 7.23% referral split, the Similarweb Aug 2026 chatbot panel (ChatGPT 55.5%, Gemini 25.6%, Claude 9.3%), the Ahrefs 462.8M-prompt surface distribution, and two new FAQs.
The single most useful GEO number in 2026 is now a causal one: 38%. A randomized field experiment with 1,065 US desktop Chrome users found that hiding Google AI Overviews raised outbound organic clicks from 0.38 to 0.61 per search, lifted zero-click searches from 54% to 72%, and changed user satisfaction by nothing measurable (Agarwal & Sen, 2026). Everything below is context for that figure. Behind it: AI search traffic grew 16× from 2024 to 2026 (SE Ranking, 101,574-website study). ChatGPT still commands 74.78% of AI referral traffic while Claude surged 320% year-over-year. Google AI Mode hit 75 million daily users in early 2026. The GEO services market is projected to reach $7.3 billion by 2031 (Valuates Reports). Google AI Overviews now cover ~48% of US queries (BrightEdge, Feb 2026), and ChatGPT reached ~1.2 billion monthly active users by June 2026 (valueaddvc). The September 2026 additions (§61–70) settle a different question: a page in organic position 1 is cited only 24.9% of the time (Conductor, 167,867,680 citations), while ranked topical coverage correlates with AI citations at 0.51 against Domain Rating's 0.09 (Floyi, 2026). This reference was refreshed 2 November 2026 — the new block (§101–110) adds the first causal number on AI click loss (a randomized field experiment: 38% of outbound clicks suppressed on triggered queries, with no measurable gain in user satisfaction), the retrieval-versus-page-features split (32% vs 2.8% of within-site citation variation), and the supply-side finding that 97% of citations point at pages the cited brand does not own. The October 2026 block (§71–82) covers the access layer: only 29% of the top 817 sites name an AI crawler, and training crawlers are blocked about 1.8× as often as search crawlers. Earlier rows use the latest source-attributed datasets from Nico Digital, Instantpress, and Axis Intelligence.
Every statistic below includes its source and year. Use them in your own content — these are the numbers AI engines are extracting and citing. Statistics and sourced citations each lift AI visibility on their own — +33% and +28% respectively — and the paper describes its strongest methods as delivering up to 40% relative gain, but it never tested the two together, so no combined figure should be quoted (Princeton GEO study, KDD 2024).
The 6 headline numbers for 2026: AI search traffic grew 16× from 2024 to 2026, now accounting for ~1 in every 312 website visits (SE Ranking, 2026). Google's search market share dropped below 90% for the first time (StatCounter, 2026). 50% of B2B buyers now start research in AI chatbots instead of Google (G2, 2026). AI search conversion rate is 23× higher than organic search (Ahrefs, 2026). Google AI Overviews now cover ~48% of US queries — a near 8× expansion since early 2025 (BrightEdge, Feb 2026). 75% of digital agencies have launched GEO service offerings (Search Engine Land, 2025).

"Pages containing citations or statistics get higher visibility in AI answers — the paper describes its strongest methods as delivering up to 40% relative gain. The combination of fluency + statistics beats any single strategy by an additional 5.5%. Statistics and citations were each measured alone and never scored as a pair, so no combined multiplier exists for them. Schema markup increases citation likelihood by 3×. Read multi-strategy optimization as several independently supported levers, not as one compounding score."

Citation statistics mid-September 2026 (61–70)
The most consequential numbers published between 11 and 22 September 2026 all answer one question: what actually determines whether a page gets cited. Rank is a real but minority factor. Topical coverage, retrieval passages and brand memory do far more work. These ten data points are the current best evidence, and each one is quoted with its sample size so you can judge it.
| # | Statistic | Source |
|---|---|---|
| 61 | A page in organic position 1 is cited in 24.9% of AI Overviews, falling to 10.2% at position 10 — and 57% of all citations go to pages outside the organic top 10 | Conductor, 167,867,680 citations, Jun 15 – Aug 15 2026 |
| 62 | Ranked topical coverage correlates with AI citations at 0.51 on AI Overviews, while Domain Rating manages only 0.09 — a 5.7× gap | Floyi Topical Authority Report 2026 |
| 63 | Sites ranking for at least half of a topic map's queries were cited in 30.8% of relevant AI Overviews, versus 0.14% for sites covering under 5% | Floyi, 42 topical maps / 354,955 citations, 2026 |
| 64 | Email the same generative query to ChatGPT five times and you get five different answers; brand mentions stay stable while cited URLs change between runs | Floyi, 4,000 query runs across 800 generative queries, 2026 |
| 65 | Bing delivers limited generative search results on only about 10% of search phrases, making them rare rather than the norm | Floyi live SERP sampling, 2026 |
| 66 | A claim audit found 11.0% of 98,020 atomic AI Overview claims were unsupported by the pages the summary cited | SQ Magazine compilation, Sep 2026 |
| 67 | Nearly 30% of domains cited in AI Overviews never appear anywhere in the co-displayed first-page results | SQ Magazine / independent activation studies, Sep 2026 |
| 68 | Traditional-result click rate on a search page carrying an AI summary is 8% of visits — versus 15% without one — while clicks on links inside the summary land at 1% | Pew Research Center, 2026 |
| 69 | Only 8% of 1,006 audited pages carry generic schema, yet generic markup was cited 41.6% of the time versus 59.8% for pages with no markup at all — while attribute-rich markup reached 61.7% | Independent 2026 controlled page test |
| 70 | Heavily cited content averages 20.6% entity density against 5–8% for standard English — but a pre-registered 22-query test at 12.9 to 29.5 entities per 1,000 words produced zero citations at every level | Kevin Indig analysis + GEO Lab controlled test, 2026 |
How to read 61–70 together: these are not competing claims, they describe different stages of the same pipeline. Ranking decides whether you enter the candidate pool (a real but weak advantage). Topical coverage decides whether the engine retrieves any of your pages when the query fans out into sub-queries. Entity recognition decides whether the model can identify your brand at all. Retrieval returns passages, not documents, which is why URL-level stability is so low. Quote one number at a time, always with its sample size — and never plot a forward-direction rate (61) against a backward-direction share on the same trend line.
October 2026 access & crawler statistics (71–82)
October 2026 produced the first large, denominated panels of what the top of the web does at the access layer. That matters because access is the one gate that no content change can compensate for: Chen & Koudas found 100.0% of 22,315 cited URLs had first been returned by the engine's own search. If the crawler never got the page, nothing on the page counts. Each row below is quoted with its sample and its denominator, because three of these numbers disagree with each other only in the way they were measured.

|---|---|---|
| 71 | 29% of the 817 most-visited sites name at least one AI crawler in robots.txt; the most-blocked tokens are training-side — CCBot 14%, GPTBot 14%, Bytespider 13%, ClaudeBot 12% — against OAI-SearchBot 5.1% and Claude-SearchBot 5.1% | BrandVector, 817 sites, 8 Oct 2026 |
| 72 | Of 4,962 parsed robots.txt files in the Tranco top 10,000, 19.2% block at least one training crawler but only 10.8% block at least one search crawler — a 1.8× split | AI Crawler Check, fetched 5 Oct 2026 |
| 73 | Only about half of the sites blocking GPTBot keep OpenAI search open: 347 of 710 still allow OAI-SearchBot — the "block training, allow search" split is common, not automatic | AI Crawler Check, 5 Oct 2026 |
| 74 | Re-fetching 400 sites that allow every AI crawler in robots.txt, 3.8% still refused a search crawler at the firewall (OAI-SearchBot 3.0%, PerplexityBot 3.3%, Claude-SearchBot 2.7%) and 13% refused a training crawler | Houston AI Visibility Index, WAF follow-up 3 Oct 2026 |
| 75 | Counting both layers, about 5% of independent sites block AI search crawlers — roughly 3× the 1.6% a robots.txt-only audit reports | Houston AI Visibility Index, Oct 2026 |
| 76 | Bot protection blocked or challenged a declared crawler on 16% of 375 homepages — 27.3% of e-commerce sites | AEOeye, 384-site panel, 3 Oct 2026 |
| 77 | Publishers close the door far more than SaaS: at least one retrieval bot blocked by 71.1% of 38 news sites, versus 0.5% of 193 SaaS sites | AEOeye, 3 Oct 2026 |
| 78 | Crawl-to-refer, 7 days to 6 Oct: Perplexity 3,700:1, Anthropic 473:1, OpenAI 392:1, Microsoft 41:1, Google 4.9:1 | Cloudflare Radar, Oct 2026 |
| 79 | The median small-business site sees 33.7 OpenAI page fetches per ChatGPT visitor (middle half: 12–101): 17.1 search/user, 8.5 GPTBot — against a pooled 153:1 on the same sites | LovedByAI, 924 sites, 6 Sep – 5 Oct 2026 |
| 80 | Training-side volume dominates the request count: Meta-ExternalAgent made 131,105 of 143,601 AI requests (91.3%) on one monitored site in 30 days, versus 5.2% from OpenAI and 0.4% from PerplexityBot | Attensira edge log, 5 Sep – 4 Oct 2026 |
| 81 | Cloudflare shipped a Web Search API at $0.25 / $5.00 / $7.00 per 1,000 requests with verified-bot compliance and source attribution as provider conditions; pay-per-crawl (HTTP 402) went private beta on 1 July 2025 and shifted toward per-answer payment on 1 July 2026 | Cloudflare, 2 Oct 2026 |
| 82 | 52.4% of checkable sites serve a valid llms.txt (173 of 330) — led by SaaS at about 60% against 1 of 29 publishers — while no major engine documents using it for answers | AEOeye, 3 Oct 2026 |
How to read 71–82 together: four panels, four denominators, one consistent direction. Training crawlers are blocked roughly twice as often as search crawlers (71–73); roughly a third of the sites that intend to allow search crawlers still fail at the edge (74–76); and the traffic you actually pay for in bandwidth is not the traffic that cites you (78–80). The practical instruction is to stop reading these as industry commentary and start reading them as an audit checklist — the number that matters for your site is your own four-layer result, not the panel median.
October 2026 citation mechanics & budget statistics (83–92)
This block is different from the ones above: 83–88 measure why a page gets cited rather than how much traffic AI search has, and 89–92 measure what marketers are actually funding. They are the numbers to quote when someone asks whether GEO is a real budget line or a content-marketing nicety.

| 87 | In a niche B2B market, the ChatGPT model named tracked vendors in only 2–16% of questions versus 60–96% for Gemini — B2B visibility leans on retrieval, not memory | Chen & Koudas, arXiv:2610.15033, Oct 2026 |
| 88 | Title-and-paragraph match to the question asked was the one page-level factor surviving a within-site test: +15.5% citation odds per standard deviation in best-paragraph match | Chen & Koudas, arXiv:2610.15033, Oct 2026 |
| 89 | 81% of 343 US marketing decision-makers still describe their AI search visibility strategy as "SEO", yet 24% of the average search or content budget now goes to AI search work | BizScoreAI survey, 343 US marketing decision-makers, Oct 2026 |

| 97 | No combined statistics × citations lift exists. Princeton measured statistics +33% and citing sources +28% separately; the pair was never tested. The only measured combination is fluency + statistics (+5.5% over any single method) | Aggarwal et al., KDD 2024; correction published 26 Oct 2026 |
| 98 | Volume-controlled paired edits of the three headline tactics produced near-zero or negative estimates: quotations −0.325pp (95% CI −0.841 to +0.171), statistics −0.276pp (CI −0.970 to +0.425), cite-sources −0.793pp (CI −1.533 to −0.138) | Bajemon & Rochet, arXiv preprint, 7 Sep 2026 (not peer reviewed) |
| 99 | Retrieval and citation are two distinct stages: a page can be retrieved without being cited, and pages retrieved more often are more likely to be cited. Google Search plus OpenAI's Responses API together recovered only about one quarter of the URLs ChatGPT Web cited | arXiv study of ChatGPT web retrieval, 11 Oct 2026 (preprint, ChatGPT 5.2–5.5) |
| 100 | Cited pages share plain structural traits — headings, tables, FAQ blocks, an author box and a current title — while llms.txt showed no measurable advantage | SISTRIX, Citation Worthiness study, 22 Oct 2026 |
November 2026 retrieval, freshness & click-loss statistics (101–110)
Rows 101–110 are the first block built around a randomized experiment rather than a correlation. They cover four things earlier blocks could only guess at: the causal size of the click loss AI Overviews cause, how much of a citation decision is explained by retrieval versus page features, what recency is actually worth in citation odds, and how the citation supply side is distributed across owned, earned and third-party domains. Where a number is an association rather than a cause, the row says so.
| # | Statistic | Source & date |
|---|---|---|
| 101 | Removing AI Overviews raised outbound organic clicks from 0.38 to 0.61 per search — AI Overviews suppress 38% of outbound clicks on the queries where they appear; zero-click searches rose from 54% to 72% | Agarwal & Sen (Indian School of Business / Carnegie Mellon), randomized field experiment, 1,065 US desktop Chrome users, Jan–Feb 2026; Search Engine Journal |
| 102 | Hiding AI Overviews produced no measurable change in satisfaction, perceived information quality or ease of finding information; 95%+ of treated users never noticed the difference — visibility to the user, invisible loss to the publisher | Agarwal & Sen, endline survey, 2026 (working paper, SSRN; not peer reviewed) |
| 103 | The effect is positional: AI Overviews sat at the top of the page 85% of the time, and removing top-position overviews nearly doubled outbound clicks, while lower-positioned overviews had no measurable effect | Agarwal & Sen, 2026 |
| 104 | A second randomized trial (Penn / Northeastern, 1,100 volunteers, 7 days) reached the same direction: AI Mode kept users inside Google longer, sent them to sites less often and lowered satisfaction; an interim code change meant only 51.1% of overviews in the hide arm were actually hidden, so treat the size as a floor | Draft paper, August 2026; WebProNews |
| 105 | Within the same site, the engine's own retrieval explains ~32% of citation variation while page properties — FAQ blocks, schema, summary boxes, page speed — explain ~2.8%; title-and-paragraph match to the question was the one page-level factor that survived, at roughly +15.5% citation odds per standard deviation | Chen & Koudas, arXiv:2610.15033, 10 Oct 2026 (158,099 answers / 468,037 citations) |
| 106 | Pages published or updated in the previous 12 months had 88% higher odds of being cited — an association, not a causal multiplier, and the study notes that changing a timestamp alone does not earn it | TJ Digital citation study, weekly collection 27 Aug – 21 Oct 2026 (ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, AI Overviews) |
| 107 | Page type matters more than most checklists admit: product pages were the most-cited page type at 28% of citations, articles about one quarter, with homepages, category pages and profile pages all appearing regularly | TJ Digital, 2026 |
| 108 | Only 2.9% of AI citations point at the cited brand's own domain, while 75.2% point at third-party, competitor and publisher pages; listicles account for 35.7% of content citations | Ranqo Labs, 149,912 citations across 5 engines, Mar–May 2026 |
| 109 | Brand-owned domain share of AI citations ranged from 0% to 74.7% across eight industries; comparison pages earned 1.87 citations per retrieval (≈45% above the 1.29 average) but represented only 4.1% of all citations — high yield per page, tiny share of supply | DeltaV Digital, 25,337 citations, 14 Apr – 13 Jul 2026 |
| 110 | In 30 of 100 B2B software queries the engine recommended a product without citing that product's own site; 67.4% of citations came from sources outside the organic top 10 | DerivateX, 1,259 AI Overview citations, June 2026 |
How to read 101–110 together: rows 101–104 answer the question every publisher asks first — how much traffic does the AI answer take? — with a causal estimate of roughly 38% of outbound clicks on triggered queries, and no compensating gain for the user. Rows 105–107 answer the second question — what can I control? — and the answer is narrower than the vendor market implies: retrieval and question match carry about 11× the explanatory power of page features, and recency earns its 88% only when the update is substantive. Rows 108–110 answer the third — where do citations actually come from? — and the uncomfortable answer is that 97% of them arrive from pages you do not own. That is why the practical unit of GEO is no longer the page but the claim plus its attribution chain: a fact stated cleanly, dated, and repeated by third parties is what survives the squeeze.
How to read 93–100 together: rows 93–96 say AI referral is small as a channel and growing as a surface (88% AIO coverage on commercial keywords). Rows 97–98 say the most-quoted GEO multipliers do not survive scrutiny as multipliers — one was never measured and the other shrank under controlled replication. Rows 99–100 say where the real signal is: retrieval first, structure second, citation third. If you cite only four numbers from this page, cite 94 (conversion gap), 95 (AIO coverage), 97 (no composite figure) and 99 (two-stage funnel).
How to read 83–92 together: the first six rows are causal, not descriptive — they say which lever moves a citation, and the answer is largely retrieval and question-matching rather than markup. The last four say something more awkward: the work has a real budget (24% of search spend, 77% of agencies raising it) while the vocabulary and the platform selection remain immature (81% still call it SEO, only 1% target Perplexity). That gap is where a content advantage is still available — the buyer is funding the work but cannot yet evaluate the method, which is precisely why method transparency outranks acronym fluency as a trust signal at 71% to 9%.
How to use these statistics
Three principles for using these statistics in your own content:
- 1.Always cite the source and year. "AI search grew 16× from 2024 to 2026 (SE Ranking, 2026)" beats "AI search grew significantly." The citation signal is itself a +28% GEO strategy.
- 2.Place statistics in the first two sentences of a paragraph. Statistics placed early are 2.3× more likely to be cited than statistics buried mid-paragraph.
- 3.Use the four-part format. Number + unit + source + year. Each missing part reduces citation probability by 8–12%.
- 4.Refresh statistics every 60 days. Pages less than two months old receive +28% more AI citations than pages older than six months (Profound, 2026). A statistic dated 2024 reads as stale to an engine trained on 2026 data — recency is itself a citation signal.
"The combination of fluency + statistics beats any single strategy by an additional 5.5%. Beyond that pair, the paper reports no measured joint effect for stacking further methods — quotations + statistics + citations + fluency was never scored as one bundle. Read the nine as weights that point in the same direction, not as a multiplicative system."
Frequently asked questions
What are the most important GEO statistics for 2025–2026?
The most-cited GEO statistics in 2026 are: AI search traffic grew 16× from 2024 to 2026 (SE Ranking), Google AI Overviews covers roughly 48% of US queries (BrightEdge, Feb 2026) with published estimates spanning 13.7% to 93% depending on query mix, Google search share dropped below 90% (StatCounter), 50% of B2B buyers now start research in AI chatbots not Google (G2), and the GEO services market is projected at $7.3 billion by 2031 (Valuates Reports). ChatGPT commands 74.78% of AI referral traffic and held 55.5% of AI chatbot website traffic in August 2026 (Similarweb), while Claude grew 320% year-over-year.
How big is AI search traffic compared with Google organic search?
Small, and smaller than most GEO marketing implies. Marie Haynes analysed 12 months of GA4 data from 100 sites and 145M+ sessions (21 Oct 2026): ChatGPT delivered sessions equal to 0.62% of what Google organic delivered, and every LLM combined reached 0.73%. The SEO Works benchmarked 95 sites and found 2,825,594 organic sessions against 72,095 AI referral sessions — 39× more. AI visitors do convert far better (13.8% vs 3.02%, Haynes), but Google organic still produced 96.5% of tracked conversions. Meanwhile AI Overviews now appear on 88% of tracked commercial keywords (Semrush, 21 Oct 2026): the answer surface is large even where the click volume is not. Treat AI search as a brand and citation channel measured by citation share, not as a traffic replacement.
How much do GEO strategies boost AI visibility?
The Princeton GEO study (KDD 2024) measured: expert quotations +41%, statistics +33%, fluency +29%, citing sources +28%, authoritative tone +9%, summarization +6%, easy-to-understand language +4%, technical terms +2%, and keyword stuffing −8%. Combined fluency + statistics beats any single strategy by an additional 5.5%. Schema markup increases citation likelihood by 3× (StatDigital, 2026). Pages less than 2 months old receive +28% more citations (Profound, 2026).
How many people use ChatGPT in 2026?
ChatGPT has surpassed 1 billion monthly active users as of early 2026 (OpenAI), with 900 million+ weekly active users and approximately 2.5 billion daily prompts (Backlinko, 2026), reaching ~1.2 billion MAU by June 2026 (valueaddvc). It commands 74.78% of all AI search referral traffic (SE Ranking study of 101,574 websites) and held 55.5% of AI chatbot website traffic in August 2026 (Similarweb), down from 73.3% a year earlier.
Does GEO work better for low-ranking or high-ranking pages?
GEO works dramatically better for low-ranking pages. The Princeton study found that pages ranked 5th in traditional search achieved up to +115.1% visibility improvement after GEO optimization, while the 1st-ranked page actually lost 30% visibility. By 2026, AI Overview citations from top-10 pages dropped from 76% to 38%, and a 2026 enterprise audit put the overlap between top-10 organic rankings and AI Overview citations at just 17–38%. GEO democratizes AI search visibility.
How often does the same query return different AI search results?
The same query returns different brand recommendations on approximately 99 of 100 runs across major AI search engines (SparkToro, 2026). Monthly citation churn is 40–60% (Profound, 2026). AI Mode and AI Overviews cite the same URL only 14% of the time (Digital Applied, 2026), and SEO Pulse found different engines named the same top vendor in under 1.5% of 1,500 commercial prompts. Multi-run aggregation (10+ runs per query) is required.
Which signal correlates most strongly with AI search visibility?
YouTube brand mentions. The Ahrefs study of 75,000 brands (3 September 2026) measured a 0.737 correlation between YouTube mentions and how often AI systems name a brand, with YouTube view counts at 0.717 and unlinked web brand mentions at 0.656–0.709. By contrast, Domain Rating reached only 0.266–0.326, ad spend 0.215–0.286, and raw backlink and page counts correlated close to zero.
How much of AI search traffic converts compared with organic search?
Materially better per visit. Ahrefs (2026) measured AI search converting at 23× the rate of organic search; Opollo found AI-referred B2B visitors converting at 14.2% versus 2.8% for Google organic; Semrush reports the average AI search visitor is worth 4.4× a traditional organic visitor. Brainlabs, across 54 clients and 19 sectors, recorded AI platform referrals up 163% and AI-driven key events up 335%.
How often does Google show an AI Overview in 2026?
It depends entirely on the query mix sampled. A May 2026 academic study of 55,393 queries over 40 days found AI Overviews on 13.7% of queries overall but 64.7% of question-form queries. An 11,500-query study measured 51.5%. BrightEdge reported ~48% of US queries (Feb 2026), Similarweb 43% (Jul 2026), and a 300-query small-business marketing snapshot on 10 September 2026 recorded 93%. Always quote the query type and method behind the number.
How big is the GEO services market?
Valuates Reports sized the GEO services market at $886 million in 2024 and projects $7.3 billion by 2031, a 34% CAGR. Adoption tracks that curve: 75% of digital agencies have launched GEO service offerings (Search Engine Land, 2025), LinkedIn job postings mentioning GEO rose 210%, 63% of marketers now prioritize generative search, and 54% of US marketers plan to implement GEO (Superlines / Incremys, 2026).
How often should GEO statistics be refreshed?
Every 60 days at most. Pages less than two months old receive +28% more AI citations than pages older than six months (Profound, 2026), and roughly half of the content cited in AI responses is under 13 weeks old, with pages going more than three months without an update over 3× more likely to lose AI visibility. Use the four-part format — number, unit, source and year — since each missing part reduces citation probability by 8–12%.
Does a #1 Google ranking guarantee an AI Overview citation?
No. Conductor analysed 167,867,680 AI Overview citations collected between 15 June and 15 August 2026 and found a page in organic position 1 is cited 24.9% of the time, falling to 10.2% at position 10, with 57% of all citations going to pages outside the organic top 10. Ranking is a real probabilistic advantage and simultaneously a minority source of citations. Report citation rate by position rather than assuming rank converts.
What predicts AI citations better than domain authority?
Ranked topical coverage. The Floyi Topical Authority Report 2026 matched 354,955 AI citations across Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT and Gemini against 535,239 top-20 rankings held by 110,169 sites. Ranked coverage correlated with AI Overview citations at 0.51 while Domain Rating managed 0.09 — a 5.7× gap. Sites ranking for at least half of a topic map's queries were cited in 30.8% of relevant AI Overviews, versus 0.14% for sites covering under 5%.
Is generic schema markup better or worse than no markup at all?
Worse, in the one controlled test that isolated the variable. Across 1,006 pages, generic schema was cited 41.6% of the time versus 59.8% for pages carrying no markup at all, while attribute-rich markup reached 61.7%. Schema presence alone has tested null in two separate studies, so the operative distinction is specificity rather than presence. Most sites genuinely have attributes to expose — organisations rarely describe their own expertise, authorship or subject matter in markup, even though the schema types exist precisely for that.
How stable are AI citations across repeated runs of the same prompt?
Far less stable than brand mentions. Wellows measured only 10.2% of cited URLs appearing on more than one engine across 596,723 prompts, against 67.4% agreement on brand names in the answer text — a 6.6× gap. SE Ranking ran 10,000 Google AI Mode queries and found 9.2% mean URL overlap between runs with 21.2% returning zero overlap. Floyi, running 4,000 query runs across 800 prompts, reported the same pattern at the URL level. Mention rate is therefore the stable headline metric and citation URL is the diagnostic.
How accurate are AI Overview citations?
Not uniformly accurate, and the error is measurable. A September 2026 claim audit found 11.0% of 98,020 atomic AI Overview claims were unsupported by the pages the summary cited. Separately, nearly 30% of domains cited in AI Overviews never appear anywhere in the co-displayed first-page results. Both findings are operational rather than fatal: they mean a citation is not proof that your content was paraphrased faithfully, and that citation placement and claim accuracy should be audited as two separate checks.
How much traffic do AI summaries actually take away?
Pew Research Center measured a traditional-result click on 8% of visits to search pages carrying an AI summary versus 15% on pages without one — a 47% relative reduction. Clicks on links inside the summary itself landed at 1% of visits. A pre-registered field experiment by Wang et al. (N=1,100 tracked searches) found that forcing searches into AI Mode cut external click-through by 18.8 percentage points. Treat an AI citation as a visibility event, not a visit.
What do the October 2026 crawler statistics actually measure?
They measure access, not performance, and the three panels use three denominators that must not be mixed. BrandVector reports the share of 817 top sites whose robots.txt names a token and disallows the whole site (GPTBot 14%, OAI-SearchBot 5.1%). AI Crawler Check reports the share of 4,962 valid robots.txt files in the Tranco top 10,000 that block at least one training crawler (19.2%) or one search crawler (10.8%). The Houston AI Visibility Index reports what a firewall does to sites that intend to allow everyone (3.8% still refused a search crawler). The consistent finding across all three is directional: training crawlers are blocked roughly twice as often as search crawlers, and roughly a third of the sites that mean to allow search crawlers still fail at the edge.
What share of AI citation variation do page features actually explain?
About 2.8%. Chen and Koudas (arXiv:2610.15033, 10 October 2026) compared pages of the same website across 158,099 answers and 468,037 citations and found that the engine's own retrieval explains roughly 32% of within-site citation variation while page properties - FAQ blocks, structured data, summary boxes and page speed - explain about 2.8%. Those page features do correlate with citations across websites, which is why they dominate most checklists, but they carry little explanatory power between pages of the same site. The one page-level factor that survived was title-and-paragraph matching to the question asked, worth roughly +15.5% citation odds per standard deviation in best-paragraph match.
How much budget are companies actually putting into AI search visibility in 2026?
On average 24% of the total search or content budget, according to a survey of 343 US marketing decision-makers published in October 2026, with 82% having committed at least some budget and 43% allocating more than 20%. Separately, 77% of agency professionals surveyed in Q3 2026 said they plan to increase AI search and GEO budgets over the next 12 months, with 20% of that money coming out of traditional search. The vocabulary lags the spending: 81% of marketers still describe their AI search visibility strategy as SEO, and only 27% have formally adopted GEO or AEO as an internal term.
How much traffic do Google AI Overviews actually take, and is it causal?
About 38% of outbound organic clicks on the queries where an AI Overview appears, and that figure is causal rather than correlational. Agarwal and Sen (Indian School of Business and Carnegie Mellon) ran the first randomized field experiment on the question: a Chrome extension assigned 1,065 US desktop users to a normal results page or one with AI Overviews hidden in real time, for two weeks each between January and February 2026. Hiding the overview raised outbound organic clicks from 0.38 to 0.61 per search and lowered zero-click searches from 72% to 54%. Over 95% of treated users never noticed the change, and endline satisfaction, perceived information quality and ease of finding information were statistically indistinguishable between groups. The effect is positional: overviews sat at the top of the page 85% of the time, and removing top-position overviews almost doubled outbound clicks while lower ones had no measurable effect. A second trial by Penn and Northeastern researchers with 1,100 volunteers found the same direction.
Is being mentioned by AI the same as being cited by AI?
No, and the gap is large. In arXiv:2610.15033, 46% of ChatGPT brand mentions had no cited page naming or supporting the brand, and the model wrote a brand into its own search queries in 67% of cases when it already knew the brand versus 11% when it did not. Mentions can be produced by the model's internal prior, so a brand can be named repeatedly while no URL of its own is ever cited. For measurement this means brand-mention share and URL-citation share must be tracked separately; averaging them into a single visibility score hides which mechanism is actually working.

AI Citation Overlap 2026: Why 67% of Brands Are Named but Only 10% of URLs Are Reused
Across 596,723 prompts answered by two or more engines, only 10.2% of cited URLs appeared on more than one engine — but 67.4% of brand names in the answer text did (Wellows, September 2026). Updated October 2026 with the two papers that explain why: Chen & Koudas (arXiv:2610.15033, 10 October 2026) replayed 158,099 answers carrying 468,037 citations and found every page ChatGPT cites is one its own search returned, its rewritten sub-queries rarely coincide with Google or Bing, and retrieval explains 32% of citation variation against 2.8% for all page properties combined. Jiang et al. (arXiv:2610.15382, 11 October 2026) add the measurement caveat: external proxies combined recover only about one quarter of cited URLs, so track hostname and entity levels, not exact URLs. Also includes pairwise overlap (Perplexity x AIO 23.7%, ChatGPT x Gemini 11.9%), citation selection vs absorption, and the 4-step playbook.
AI Search Market Share & Growth Trends (2026 Report)
AI Search Traffic Report 2026: 16× Growth & Market Shifts
Updated 22 October 2026 with the number that resets every AI traffic projection: a web search ran in only **14.4%** of 66.6 million free, logged-out ChatGPT responses (Ahrefs, 12 Oct), averaging 1.6 fan-out queries when it did - six answers in seven were written from memory. Adds how retrieval actually behaves (**6.8%** of fan-outs use site:, **75.9%** of the most frequent target brand domains; **84.4%** of factual questions cite an official source vs 63.4% of all factual citations), the citation migration from explainers to primary sources (PubMed 64th to 4th, WebMD 18th to 79th, Reddit 19.1% to 2.3%), Google's 15 October link-placement update with the 400-publication News AI pilot and Preferred Sources up 7x, Semrush's 13 October AI Visibility Index showing fewer than half of mentioned brands are also cited domains (UK 36.7-45.3/100, US 41.4-47.4), and the Typeface authenticity-tax survey (62% say quality is being sacrificed for citations).
